Tips for Choosing Gas Grills

Cost

Gas grills can cost from under $100 to more than $6,000. How much you spend depends on your budget and how often you expect to use the grill. A householder who grills a few burgers or chicken thighs once in a while during the summer can make do with a small, inexpensive bottom-of-the-line grill. But those who frequently entertain outdoors may want a large, top-of-the-line unit loaded with options. No matter what grill you choose, it should heat evenly, be of long-lasting quality and be safe to operate.

Gas Type

Gas grills are fueled either by natural gas or propane. Natural gas grills are permanently connected to your home’s natural gas plumbing so your choice of location is limited. Installation requires hiring a licensed gas fitter. But a natural gas grill will never run out of fuel in the middle of a cooking session and natural gas has a lower cost per unit than propane. Propane grills are self-contained units fed from an on-board cylinder typically holding 20 pounds of propane fuel. They can be placed anywhere in your outdoor space. Their main drawback is that you periodically must refill the cylinder or exchange the empty cylinder for a full one.

Size

Grill size can be expressed in square inches of cooking area. A rule of thumb is to have 100 square inches of cooking area per person you are cooking for. Size can also be expressed in burner numbers. Household gas grills typically come with one to four burners. The more burners your grill has, the larger the cooking area and the more even your heat distribution. More burners also mean higher fuel consumption per hour of cooking time. Most multiurner grills have individual heat controls for each burner. Burners may be made of stainless steel, brass or cast iron.

Construction

Grills are made from sheet steel, stainless steel, cast iron or cast aluminum. They should be designed to retain heat while keeping the stand cool to the touch. Grill covers should be made of the same material as the body, with handles of wood or other heat-resistant material. Your grill may be a free-standing unit or built into an outdoor kitchen island or counter. Gas grills all have a barrier of briquettes or formed sheet metal between the burners and the food to prevent scorching from flareups caused by fats and juices. Gas grills have either porcelain coated cast iron or stainless steel grills to support the food. Cast iron grills provide more even heating but must be cleaned immediately after use. Stainless steel grills are virtually maintenance-free.

Options

Gas grills offer many options. The more expensive the grill, the more options are generally available. Stove-style side burners are a popular option for cooking sauces or side dishes while the main dish is grilling. Other common options include warming ovens, a motorized rotisserie for grilling roasts on a rotating spit, infrared ceramic burners for searing meat with extremely high heat to seal in juices, and smoking trays for flavoring meats. Also consider the length of warranty. Generally, the longer the warranty on a grill, the higher the product quality is. You also should look at whether you can take the grill home or must pay to have it shipped to you.
